Six convicts were sentenced to death for murder in three districts yesterday and on Wednesday.
In Comilla, a court yesterday sentenced three people to death for killing their friend in Chandina upazila in 2012, reports UNB.
The convicts were Abul Kalam, Toufik and Sabuj of Sayanat village in Chandina upazila.
According to the prosecution, Sujon, a bakery owner and son of Nazrul Islam of Kaladumur village in Muradnagar upazila, went out of his house along with Tk 1.60 lakh for buying a motorcycle on September 16, 2012 and did not return home.
Later, police recovered the body of Sujon from near Chandina Women Degree College on September 19.
The victim’s mother filed a case against Sujon’s three friends—Kalam, Toufik and Sabuj—with Chandina Police Station in this connection. On January 30, 2013, police submitted a charge against them after the three accused confessed to their involvement in the killing in a court. After examining 11 witnesses and documents, Judge of Comilla Additional Session Judge’s Court-4 Nur Nahar Begum Sheuli handed down the verdict.
In Bagerhat, a court yesterday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in 2013, reports UNB.
The condemned convict, Mahmudul Alam,33, son of Shamsul Alam Shikder, a resident of Daibakandi village in Mollahat upazila, was tried in absentia. Judge of the District and Sessions Judge’s Court Mizanur Rahman Khan handed down the verdict.
According to the prosecution, Sharifa Khatun Putul, a third year student of Eden Mohila College, Dhaka, and daughter of Abu Daud Sheikh, a resident of the same village, was slaughtered by her husband on May 13, 2013, three days after their marriage. Later, Mahmudul obtained bail after surrendering before a court.
Later upon expiry of his bail he went into hiding. Abu Daud Sheikh, father of the victim, filed a murder case with Mollahat police station on May 14, 2013.
Officer-in-charge of the police station Abu Sayeed Mohammad Khairul Anam, also investigation officer of the case, submitted a charge sheet accusing Mahmudul Alam.
Our Jessore correspondent adds: a court on Wednesday convicted a woman and sentenced her to death for killing her stepson at Balia village in Jhikargachha upazila in 2009.
The convict was identified as Bilkis Begum, wife of Ayatullah Khomeni, a resident of Balia village. She was tried in absentia. According to the prosecution, Ayatullah Khomeni married Bilkis in 2005 after his first wife Rokasana divorced him over family feud.
However, Bilkis did not develop a good relation with her stepson Rabbi after the marriage and she used to torture the boy always.
On October 13, 2009, Bilkis mixed pesticide with rice and fed it to Rabbi and the minor boy fell seriously ill afterwards.
Later, Rabbi was taken to a hospital the same day where he died at night.
Following this, victim’s uncle Maminur Rahman filed a case with Jhikargaccha Police Station against Bilkis. On June 9, 2010, police submitted charge sheet against Bilkis.
After examining all records and witnesses, Judge of the Special Judge’ s Court Nitai Chandra Shaha handed down the verdict.
