A director general (DG)-level meeting of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Indian Border Security Force (BSF) is scheduled to begin at Pilkhana in the capital today. The meeting, actually scheduled for December 23 last year, was postponed following the deaths of 10 BSF members in a Delhi plane crash.
At the meet, the two DGs will review the progress of the Bangladesh-India coordinated border management plan. They will also discuss ways to improve the management of the porous 4,096km border between the two countries.
The BGB DG, Maj Gen Aziz Ahmed, told The Independent that they would discuss bilateral issues, especially better border management to curb cross-border terrorism.
“At the meeting, we will strongly protest border killings by the BSF”.
Ahmed also said that he would urge his counterpart to take steps to prevent smuggling of arms, explosives, drugs and other contraband items into Bangladesh from India.
The BGB DG is likely to tell his Indian counterpart that the Bangladesh-India joint border guidelines should be followed to letter in resolving any problem that may
crop up.
Ahmed will lead a 21-member delegation to the talks while his counterpart Shri KK Sharma will lead a 23-member
delegation.
