Swedish Minister for Justice and Migration Morgan Johansson today advocated creating a policy framework to foster "orderly and well-managed" migration process as it is the most crucial global issue.
"We, especially the source and destination countries, have to work together by involving private sector and formulate a policy guideline to address the issue which emerged as one of the most crucial ones in the present global perspective," he said.
The Swedish minister, who arrived here yesterday on a two-day official visit to Bangladesh to discuss global migration issue, said this at a public lecture on "Emerging Global Migration and Mobility, Trends and Issues: Swedish Perspective" in a local hotel yesterday afternoon, reports BSS.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md. Shahriar Alam, Foreign Secretary Md. Shahidul Haque and Swedish Ambassador to Bangladesh Johan Frisell also spoke on the occasion.
Referring to protect rights of migrant workers, Johansson said that a global policy framework is needed to protect migrant rights and to deal with labour market.
He said the destination and the source countries have to be more pro-active to address the refugee issue worldwide and fruitful collaboration is needed among the countries involved to resolve the
crisis.
"We need true partnership and collaboration to address the refugee crisis globally in a holistic manner," he added.
Mentioning that Sweden was struggling with huge asylum seekers presently, the Swedish minister said that at least 1.60 lakh people sought asylum in Sweden last year which is double than that of the previous year.
The numbers of asylum seekers have been increasing in Sweden, the country of 10 million people, every year, he added.
The Swedish minister also focused on ensuring worker's rights, formation of labour organizations, preventing exploitation in work place and fair recruitment process of migrant workers.
He said the migrants should be organised to realise their rights in destination countries as power of solidarity plays a very vital role.
He expressed the hope that global leaders would be able to bring out pro-migrant approaches from the upcoming Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD), to be held in Dhaka next December.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam said since migration has both positive and negative aspects, the issue would be how we capture the transformative aspects arising out of migration in a globalised and fast connected world.
He said migration has played a crucial role in uplifting people from poverty and also contributed to the economic development in the destination economies - which regrettably is most often little recognized and mapped.
"Migration has to be regarded as a key factor in economic emancipation ... a globalised world and economy calls for much greater movement of people and in the process, their dignity must be upheld, rights must be protected," he added.
