Pass rate rises, number of GPA-5 falls

Although the pass percentage of the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and equivalent exams has increased by 1.25 compared to last year, the number of Grade Point Average (GPA)-5 achievers has decreased.
The number of educational institutions having a pass percentage of one hundred has dropped by 361, and those with zero pass percentage have increased by six, compared to the previous year.
This year, the average pass percentage of the SSC and equivalent exams under 10 education boards is 88.29. It was 87.04 last year.
Besides, the pass percentage of girls has risen by 0.19 per cent compared to boys this year. But boys are ahead of girls in getting GPA-5.
The pass percentage of girls is 88.39, while for boys it is 88.20. A total of 57,727 boys got GPA-5, and 52,034 girls obtained GPA-5. The number of girls appearing for the exams rose by 17,616, and the number of girls passing out was higher than boys by 14,791.
A total of 14,52,605 examinees out of 16,45,201 passed under 10 education boards and the number of GPA-5 holders were 1,09,761 this year, slightly down from 1,11,901 last year.
Under the 10 education boards, the highest pass percentage of 95.70 was in Rajshahi, and the lowest was in the Barisal board with 79.41.
The Dhaka Education Board obtained 40,833 GPA-5, the highest, while the Sylhet board got the lowest, 2,266.
Last year, the number 100 per cent pass educational institutions was 5,095; this year it is 4,734. Besides, the number of zero pass institutions this year is 53; it was 47 in 2015.
Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid gave this information at a press conference at his office at the Secretariat yesterday (Wednesday).
Under the eight education boards, the total pass percentage was 88.70, an increase of 1.98 compared to last year's 86.72.
The number of GPA-5 holders under eight education boards this year is 96,769, which was 93,631 last year.
The Rajshahi board secured the highest pass percentage of 95.70, followed by Jessore (91.85 per cent), Chittagong (90.44 per cent),  Dinajpur (89.59 per cent), Dhaka (88.67 per cent), Sylhet (84.77 per cent) and Comilla boards (84 per cent).
Under eight education boards, Dhaka obtained the highest GPA-5, 40,833, followed by Rajshahi 17,594. Jessore 9,444, Dinajpur 8,899, Chittagong 7,666, Comilla 6,954, Barisal 3,113 and Sylhet 2,266.

The pass percentage under the Madrasa Board was 88.22, which was 90.20 last year, which means a drop by 1.98 per cent. Even the number of GPA-5 under the Madrasa Board dropped drastically to 5,895, whereas it was 11,338 last year.
This year, the pass percentage under the Technical Board is 83.11, which was 83.01 last year. Besides, the number of GPA-5 has increased by 165 compared to last year’s 6,932.
The pass percentage in the Science Group has dropped by 0.46 this year compared to last year, but the number of GPA-5 holders has increased. From this group, 89,384 students obtained GPA-5, which was 86,275 last year. The pass percentage this year is 95.89.
The pass percentages of the humanities and business study groups are 83.36 and 88.98—an increase of 4.04 and 2.05, respectively. The number of GPA-5 in the humanities group dropped by six this year (1,201).
At the overseas centres, 395 students sat for the exams. As many as 353 of them passed the exams and 112 got GPA-5.
About the increase in the average pass rate, the education minister said: “A number of initiatives were taken by the ministry, such as distributing textbooks in time, telecasting the teaching of best educational institutions and different anti-copying initiatives and use of the ICT.”
Among others, education secretary Md Sohrab Hossain, director general of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Prof. Fahima Khatun, ministry officials and chairpersons of boards were present on the occasion.
In the morning, the education minister and board chairmen handed over the results to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her Ganabhaban residence.
