Promotion for 400 soon

At least 400 bureaucrats are soon going to be promoted to the post of additional secretary, from the post of joint secretary (JS); deputy secretary (DS), from joint secretary; and senior assistant secretary, from deputy secretary; in civil bureaucracy. These officials had not been promoted during the recent promotion-spree of bureaucrats.
Of them, over 90 joint secretaries are likely to be promoted to the rank of additional secretary, within a week, said sources in public administration. The rest will get their promotion by the end of this month, they added.
The sources revealed that over 90 joint secretaries are likely to be promoted to the post of additional secretary, while 150 deputy secretaries will be promoted to the post of joint secretary. The rest 150 senior assistant secretaries will be promoted to the post of deputy secretary as per the recommendations of the Superior Selection Board (SSB).
The SSB, headed by the Cabinet Secretary, has finalised three lists for the three-tier posts of additional secretary, joint secretary and deputy secretary, after holding 11 meetings from December last year till the end of the last month, the sources claimed.
State minister for public administration, Ismat Ara Sadek, told The Independent that they will not delay further to give promotion to the officials. “We'll try to promote these officials as soon as possible. If we fail to promote them all at a time, then we'll gradually promote them to their new posts, within the shortest possible time,” she said.
She also said that these officials would finally be promoted on the basis of merit and efficiency.
Sources claimed that the senior secretary of the public administration ministry is now visiting Russia and is supposed to return on May 15. After his return, the senior secretary will formally promote these officials as per the directives issued by the higher ups in the administration, they said.
According to the sources, the government recently promoted 872 officials. Of them, 231 officials were promoted to the post of additional secretary, 299 to the post of joint secretary, and 342 to the post of deputy secretary.
But, at least 1,000 officials had not been promoted without any specific cause. On receiving this information, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked the authorities concerned to take steps to promote these officials.
At present, there are 73 senior secretaries, secretaries and acting secretaries.
In all, there are 363 additional secretaries against 110 posts, 882 joint secretaries against 341 sanctioned posts, 1,295 deputy secretaries  against 1,303 sanctioned posts, and 1,392 senior assistant secretaries against 2,340 sanctioned posts, in the civil administration.
