Tidal surge recently inundated over five villages in Koyra upazila of Khulna district, said Md Badiuzzaman, upazila nirbahi officer of Koyra upazila. But the extent of loss could not be estimated immediately, he added.
The five villages are--Gazipara, Bedkashi, Dewyankhali, Kathmarchar and Puthirgheri. Situation is worsening as the marketplaces and shops have gone under saline water paralysing the economy of the affected villages, said Union Parishad Chairman Sardar Nurul Islam.
He also said that 5 villages under Uttar Bedkashi union were inundated as around 150 yards of the cross-dam in Gazipara area washed away due to the pressure of strong current and high tide of the River Kobadak.
Sub-assistant Engineer Md Khairul Islam of the Water Development Board said the embankment was constructed a few years ago after the cyclone Aila under Food for Work Programme. But it collapsed as furious tides of the Kobadak rose up to four to five feet higher than normal levels. Now they are trying to reconstruct the breached ring embankments, he said further.
At least 200 families of these villages have been rendered homeless, as they have lost their homesteads in the flash flood. They are passing hard time, said Koyra upazila parishad chairman AKM Tamiz Uddin. The homeless people have taken shelter on the high roads or cross-dam built by the Bangladesh Water Development Board.
