Farmers expect good yield of jack-fruit

A bumper production of jack-fruit is likely as the tender fruits are now growing excellent amid favourable climatic condition this season in Rangpur agriculture region, officials and experts said, reports BSS.
Horticulture Specialist Khondker Md Mesbahul Islam of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) told BSS recently that the growing jack-fruits are becoming bigger in size despite rise in temperature amid drought-like situation.
The farmers have cultivated jack-fruit on 3,250 hectares of land with a target of producing 63,500 tonnes of the national fruit in Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat districts under Rangpur agriculture region this season.
“The farmers should maintain cleanliness at root level soil in their jack-fruit orchards or homesteads to prevent attacks by harmful insects like ‘giant mealy bug’ for getting better production of the national fruit,” Mesbahul added.
Acting Additional Director of the DAE for Rangpur agriculture region S M Ashraf Ali said buds appeared in maximum number of trees and growth of the tender jack-fruits are progressing excellent this season predicting a bumper yield.
Talking to the national news agency, jackfruit growers Abdul Haque, Jahangir Alam, Solaiman Ali, Afzal Hossain and Shyamol Chandra said they do not get fair price of jack-fruits all the time for lack of adequate marketing facilities at most places.
They called upon the authorities concerned and local entrepreneurs for taking necessary measures and setting up of preservation facilities for jack-fruits and other seasonal fruits in the region to ensure better marketing of their produce for fair price.
According to market sources, jack-fruit traders from Dhaka, Tangail, Gazipur, Narayanganj and other places have already started communicating with their local agents to purchase the fruit in next month from the major jack-fruit markets in the region.
