The Election Commission said 77.46 per cent votes were cast in the fourth phase of elections in 709 Union Parishads held on Saturday.
The EC got the final results of 649 UPs where Awami League nominated candidates won the highest number of chairman posts.
Ruling Awami League candidates won in 405 Ups, while BNP candidates secured 70. Independent candidates, mostly rebel candidates of major parties, got elected in 161 UPs and candidates of Jatiya Party, the opposition in parliament, were elected in 10 UPs.
The EC said a total of 35 chairman candidates were elected unopposed from the AL in the fourth phase, raising the total number of AL winning candidates to 440.
A total of 8947740 voter out of 1,15,50,859 were cast in Saturday’s UP election, the EC said. The EC said polls would be held again in 20 UPs as there were irregularities at some centres.
As per the EC, 70 per cent votes were cast in the first phase, 78 per cent in the second phase and 76 per cent in the third phase.
In the first phase, AL won 494, BNP 50, independent 109 while 54 AL candidates were elected unopposed.
In the second phase AL secured 419, BNP 63 and independent 117 while 34 AL candidates got elected unopposed.
In the third phase AL won 366, BNP got 60, and independent 139 while 29 AL candidates were elected unopposed.
