15 injured as AL factions clash in capital

At least 15 persons, including three policemen, were injured in a clash between two factions of the Awami League (AL) in an anti-hartal rally at the city’s Mirpur area yesterday. Police sources said supporters of AL lawmakers Aslamul Haque and Sabina Akhter Tuhin had staged rallies and brought out processions at Mirpur intersection areas in the morning in protest against the 24-hour-long hartal called by the Jamaat-e-Islami. The hartal was announced to show dissent against the Supreme Court (SC) verdict that upheld the death penalty of Jamaat leader Matiur Rahman Nizami on May 5. An altercation sparked a scuffle between the two rival AL groups in front of the Mukta Bangla Shopping Complex around 12 noon. There was an exchange of fire during which 12 people, including three policemen, were injured, said Masud Ahmed, deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (Mirpur Zone). Law enforcers fired in the air to disperse the crowd around 12:30pm, said Anwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Shah Ali Police Station. Different political and social organisations, including the Awami League and its front organisations, brought out anti-hartal processions in different parts of the country, including the capital, yesterday. They demanded the ban of Jamaat-e-Islami and urged the government to complete the execution of Nizami. Ganajagoran Mancha assembled at Shahbagh intersection area to protest the hartal. Mancha spokesperson Imran H Sarker, in a statement, said, “We held a mass signature campaign regarding the ban of Jamaat and about one crore people signed in it. We submitted that to Parliament, demanding the ban of Jammat and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir. We wonder why the government has not banned these organisations yet.” The Mancha also demanded Nizami’s execution as soon as possible.
