A mobile court yesterday has begun anti-polythene drive in the yesterday.
Fearing the drive businessmen of the city commercial area at Bazaar Road and Port Road fled the scene closing their shops.
Witnesses said a mobile court led by Dr Gazi Md Saifuzzaman, deputy commissioner Barisal, started anti-polythene drive in Bazaar Road and Port Road areas of the city yesterday morning.
Ahsan Habib, additional deputy commissioner, Asif Ahmed, nezarat deputy collector, Sukhomoy Sarkar, Nahidul Karim, Rumana Aktar, administrative magistrates of district administration, officials of BSTI, Consumer Rights Protection and Environment Directorate, members of police and armed police battalion, accompanied the mobile court.
Sukumar Biswas, director of Environment Directorate divisional office, said during the drive most of the businessmen fled from the areas closing their shops to avoid the drive.
However, the court succeeded to fine Huq Mistanna Vandar Tk 10,000, Baishakhi Poultry Feed Tk 7,000 and Bismillah Spice Crushing Mill Tk. 5,000 for using and stocking banned polythene bags and packets.
The court also seized 14-kg banned polythene from those business enterprises and later destroyed those.
