Law minister, DU VC leave programme

Law Minister Anisul Huq and Dhaka University Vice Chancellor (VC) AAMS Arefin Siddique yesterday walked out of a programme of Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) after coming to know that Saifurs, a coaching centre, sponsored the event. The law minister was invited to the programme as chief guest to felicitate the DRU members children, who excelled in their respective Primary Education Completion (PEC) and Junior School Certificate exams. Dhaka University VC Siddique was invited to the programme as a special guest. He also followed suit moments after the minister. While leaving the venue, the law minister termed Saifurs a controversial organisation and said that it was not possible for him to attend the programme. This institution (Saifurs) is controversial. It is not possible to attend the programme, the minister said. DRU President Jamal Uddin and General Secretary Raju Ahmed tried in vain to stop the minister. When contacted, the law minister said he was not aware that that a coaching centre sponsored the programme. Being the law minister, I cannot participate in such a programme when the government imposed a ban on running coaching centres in the country, he observed. Following the departure of Huq and Siddique, DRU leaders went ahead with the event with Saifurs Private Limited Chairman Shams R Khan and Managing Director Saifur Rahman Khan felicitating the students.
