5-day Rabindra Sangeet Utsab continues at Public Library

On the occasion of celebrating the 155th birth anniversary of Nobel Poet Rabindranath Tagore, Bangladesh Rabindrasangeet Shilpi Sangstha (BRSS) has organised a five-day Jatiya Rabindra Sangeet Utsab with the theme ‘Dur Koro Shongshoy Shongkar Bhar Jao Choli Timir Digonter Paar’at the Shawkat Osman Memorial Auditorium of Central Public Library, Shahbag in the city. Beginning from May 4, the festival features talks, music, poetry recitation and dance-drama, as well as recognising the works of two eminent Tagore singers. On May 4, the programme began with the rendition of the National Anthem followed by a two chorus ‘Aloker-i Jhornadharaye’ and ‘Cholo Jai Cholo Jai’ by the artistes of BRSS.
Presided over by BRSS president Tapan Mahmud, noted educationist Professor Syed Anwar Hossain inaugurated the festival as chief guest, while Sajed Akbar, general secretary of the organisation, delivered the welcome address. In the course of the programme, the organisers felicitated noted Tagore singer Hamida Haque. After the inaugural ceremony, a cultural show was held where artistes of different music schools like Uttarayan, Surer Dhara and Biswabeena presented chorus songs. There were also several solo performances, including performances by Swati Sarkar, Anabil Ehsan, Abdur Rashid, Rabita Sabah, Semonti Manjari and others. On May 5, the second day of the festival, noted dance school Nritya Nandan staged Tagore’s famous dance-drama ‘Chandalika’ alongside musical performance by the Tagore singers. Tomorrow, on the closing day of the festival, seasoned Rabindra Sangeet artiste Papia Sarwar will be honoured where litterateur and former senior secretary Dr Ranjit Biswas will attend as special guest. The organiser will also celebrate the 92nd birth anniversary of Tagore exponent and singer Kalim Sharafi followed by a musical event with recitation.
