Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) yesterday seized a huge amount of chemical mixed shrimps and banned African catfish from Kawranbazar area in the capital.
The elite force also fined eight fishermen in connection with the selling of unhygienic shrimps and banned catfish.
Talking to The Independent, Lt Col SM Masud Rana, director of RAB-2, said getting information, a team led by Additional Superintendent of Police Mizanur Rahman and Assistant Superintendent Md Atiqur Rahman raided Kawranbazar Fish Market in the city around 6am.
“Our team seized around 5,000 kg of chemical mixed shrimps and catfish,” he added. RAB destroyed the shrimps and donated the catfish to an orphanage.
Executive magistrate Abdul Kadir Miah of RAB fined the arrestees _ Shafiqur Rahman, 33, Tarikul Islam, 26, Mehedi Hasan, Al Amin, 15, Babul, 55, Foyez Uddin, 50, Al Amin, 23 and Aktaruzzaman, 34 _ Tk 3,000 each, or seven days
in prison for failure to pay the fine.
During primary interrogation, they admitted that they were using harmful chemicals only to increase weight of the shrimps, said RAB-2 boss. They were also producing and marketing banned African catfish for huge profits.
