Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, also the President of Awami League, yesterday said the government has been facing various impediments as it is holing the trial of war criminals and asked its party leaders and workers to work hard to make it stronger at all tiers, reports UNB.“The Awami League government is facing various obstacles since its formation for the second time in a row as we’ve completed the trial of Bangabandhu’s killers and are holding the trial of war criminals,” she said.
The Prime Minister was exchanging views with the leaders of Sylhet district and city unit AL during her stopover at Osmani International Airport upon her return from London. The VVIP flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines landed at the airport around 10:05 am.“Strengthening the party at every tier is necessary. We’ve already formed teams to this end,” Sheikh Hasina said adding that her government’s aim is to free the nation from stigma by finishing the trial of war criminals who committed genocide in 1971.The Prime Minister also said Bangladesh is moving fast economically and there is a marked contribution of expatriate Bangladeshis to this end.
Referring to her government’s steps taken for Sylhet region’s development, she mentioned the upgradation of Sylhet MAG Osmani Airport to an international one, modernisation of Sylhet Railway Station, establishment of a cantonment and development of the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway.
About the current flashfloods in some areas of Sylhet region which she witnessed from the Biman flight before landing today, Hasina assured that the government would take necessary steps to help the flood victims, and asked the party leaders and workers to stand beside the flood victims.
Responding to the announcement of Kamran to accord a reception to Sheikh Hasina after Ramadan for her successes in various fields, including the ratification of the Land Boundary Agreement (LBA), she said the reception should belong to the three daughters—Rushnara Ali of Sylhet, Rupa Haque of Pabna and Tulip for becoming the members of British parliament.
She also extended her heartfelt thanks to the people of Sylhet for extending their support to Tulip during the British parliamentary elections.
Sheikh Hasina visited the British Parliament on June 16 and listened to the maiden speech of her niece and Labour Party MP Tulip Rezwana Siddique at the House of Commons.Referring to the landmark four-country deal regarding seamless movement of cargo and passenger vehicles in South Asia, Hasina said now it would be possible to go to Bhutan and Nepal from Bangladesh through vehicles while the regional and sub regional connectivity would contribute to the Bangladesh economy.Chaired by Sylhet city unit AL president and former city Mayor Badaruddin Ahmed Kamran, the function was conducted by AL organizing secretary Mesbahuddin Siraj.
