The country’s flood situation is set to improve further as the major rivers registered a fall in water level. However, some minor rivers did register a rise. Kansha, for example, has registered a rise of 19 cm in the past 24 hours, and is flowing above the danger level at Jariajanjail, Netrokona.
However, even with the receding water level, situation in the river basins of the Ganges, the Brahmaputra and the Surma continues to remain serious. These rivers were in spate due to heavy rainfall in their upper catchment areas across the border. As the water is receding, it is triggering soil erosion. Situation in Bogra, Sirajganj, Gaibandha and Teesta continued to remain serious on that count.
The retreating rivers knifed through large tracts of farmlands, gnawing away buildings, huts, flood protection barriers and roads—adding to the miseries of the flood stricken.
If it does not rain in next couple of days the flood situation would improve, officials at the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) told The Independent yesterday.
They said that out of the 84 river monitoring stations in the country, 20 marked a rise in water level and 58 registered a fall. The Surma in Sunamganj is still flowing 13 cm above danger level, as is the Kansha in Netrokona. Both rivers are fed by rains in their upper catchment areas.
However, according to the Meteorological Department sources there is no danger of heavy rainfall in Barak Valley, source of the Surma, the in next two to three days. The Meteorological Department sources say that rainfall activity may increase in the next five days, with a monsoon low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal making landfall over Andhra-Orissa coast of south-east India.
