The government has undertaken a plan for constructing a "mini stadium" in every upazila at a cost of Taka 123 crore for further development of sports and games in the country. "The project, a commitment of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, got the nod of the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) last year," State Minister for Youth and Sports Biren Shikdar told parliament yesterday, reports BSS. Replying to a starred question from Jatiya Party lawmaker Mohammad Ilias (Cox's Bazar-1), the state minister said the scheme would be implemented in 490 upazilas. Biren Shikdar, however, said the execution of the project will commence in every upazila subject to the availability of three acres of government land in the respective upazila. The state minister said steps would be undertaken on emergency basis in this regard after getting "specific proposals" from the district. But the grounds of schools and colleges cannot be used, he added. Biren Shikdar also informed the House that 130 upazilas of 64 districts have sent proposals in this connection. "The proposals have been sent to the Planning Commission for its approval," he said.
