Mustafizur Rahman, the rookie left arm pacer followed up his impressive Twenty20 debut with yet another amazing start in the one-day international format to become the newest pace bowling sensation of the country.
"I wanted to perform well on my debut," said Mustafizur, 19, after yesterday’s match. "I know only a few have taken five wickets on debut, but all I wanted was to do well against India."
Mustafizur finished with 9.2-1-50-5, which propelled him to 10th place in world rankings on the basis of the overall bowling performance on debut.
He became the second Bangladeshi bowler to claim five wickets on ODI debut after his fellow fast bowler Taskin Ahmed, who achieved the feat against the same team last year but in a lost cause.
“It’s any bowler’s dream to claim five wickets on debut. I am overwhelmed,” said Mustafizur, whose feat earned him the man of the match award.
He became the second left-arm seam bowler after Zimbabwean Brian Vittori, who scalped 5-30 against Bangladesh at Harare Sporting Club ground in 2011.
The young lad launched his journey with the prized wicket of Rohit Sharma, confounding the well-set batsman with his lethal cutter to offer a catch at mid-off.
Thereafter, he sent back Ajinkya Rahane cheaply when he was on just 9. In the 25th over of the chase, MS Dhoni came into contact with the pacer while running between the wickets. Dhoni, however, held his line and thudded his left arm onto Mustafizur, who then had to leave the field for a while.
But he came back in more vigorous fashion to demolish the Indian force. He was set on a hat-trick after removing Suresh Raina and Ravichandran Ashwin in the fourth and fifth deliveries of his third spell while India were sprawling on 195-8 in 39 overs. Unfortunately, he missed his hat-trick chance.
Later, he extended his wicket tally when he trapped Ravindra Jadeja to become his fifth prey with another cutter.
On April 24, Mustafizur made his international debut in the Twenty20 against Pakistan where his 2-20 played a vital role in Bangladesh’s 7-wicket victory in the one-off match at the same venue.
