Man to die for killing wife
Tangail: A court here yesterday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in 2012, reports UNB.
The condemned convict was Nasir Uddin, 24, son of Meser Ali of Kaitkait village in Madhupur upazila.
According to the prosecution, Nurjahan, wife of Nasir Uddin was strangulated to death by her husband over Tk 20,000 as dowry on September 2, 2012.
Ziaul Haque, father of the victim filed a case in this connection.
Tangail Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Sharif Uddin Ahmed handed down the verdict.
Fake doctor jailed in Joypurhat
Joypurhat: A mobile court on Monday sentenced a fake doctor to one year’s imprisonment and fined him Tk50,000 at Nishchinta Bazar in Kalai upazila on Monday for giving treatment without having a certificate, reports UNB.
The convict was identified as Golam Mostafa, 44, son of Akam Uddin, a resident of Uttar Pakuria village of the upazila. Mostafa ran a drugstore named ‘Sultana Pharmacy’ in Nishchinta Bazar area and had been treating patients using fake identity of a doctor. He also often conducted surgical operations, endangering patients’ conditions.
On secret information, a team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-5, led by camp commander Major Md Hasan Arafat, conducted a drive in the area and arrested Mostafa.
Later Mostafa was produced before a mobile court, led by executive magistrate Md Shahidul Haque, which handed down the jail term to Mostafa along with the fine, in default of which he will have to serve three more months’ jail.
1 held with yaba, hand bombs

Police arrested an alleged drug peddler along with 20 pieces of yaba tablet and 10 hand bombs from Bejpara area of Jessore district town on Monday night.
The arrestee was identified as Babu alias Tikli Babu, son of Ayub Ali, a resident of Mathpara area of the town.
Soheb Ali, sub-inspector of Kotwali police station, said a team of police arrested Tikli Babu from the area.
Later police recovered the yaba pills and bombs after searching his house. A case was filed in this connection.
7,000 metres current net seized
PIROJPUR: A mobile court in two separate drives seized 7,000-meter banned current net from two rivers under Kawkhali upazila of the district on Monday, reports BSS.
The court, led by Kawkhali Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Laboni Chakma, seized the illegal current nets while fishermen catching fish in the Sandhya and Kacha rivers.However, nobody was arrested in this connection during the drives, the court sources said.
Phani Bushan Pal, Kawkhali upazila fisheries official, said the seized current nets, valued at Tk 2 lakh, were burnt in presence of officials concerned.
