In the midst of hundreds of stalls and thousands of buyers at the famed Canton Fair in China recently, it was exciting to see a familiar yet unexpected name: Walton ‘Made in Bangladesh' on huge billboards at the entrance to the international pavilion.
Among the hundreds of exhibitors at the section of the trade fair showcasing electronics and electrical appliances, the company was the sole representative from Bangladesh.
“We came here for the first time, and surprisingly, we have been getting good response,” said Faisal Ahmed, a senior marketing executive of Walton Group.
Prospective buyers from the host country, Southeast Asia, Middle East and Africa were seen dropping in to make enquiries at the Walton stall, neatly displaying a range of household appliances like refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, LED televisions, rechargeable fans and batteries, electric switch/sockets, induction cookers and blenders.
Md Roqibul Islam Rakib, head of international marketing of Walton Group, said: “A large number of buyers from Europe, America, Australia, Asia and Africa have visited our stand. They gathered information on Walton brand products from the company’s representatives. They were impressed by the designs, quality and competitive prices of our products.”
Many of them showed keen interest to visit the company’s factory in Bangladesh to finalise product specifications and prices before placing orders, as is the norm. The Walton authorities are hoping to receive export orders worth US$ 10 million from Australia, America, Europe, Middle East and Africa very soon, Rakib added.
Walton Hi-Tech Industries Limited has been making consumer electronic goods and motorbikes at its factory in Chandra, Gazipur for nearly a decade. It already exports to 20 countries, including Nepal and India.
“Our products are cent percent made in our home country, which is a requirement of this fair,” said Faisal Ahmed.
Canton Fair began in 1957 to introduce Chinese products to the world. Now renamed China Import and Export Fair, it is held twice a year, in spring and autumn, at the riverside Pazhou Island complex in Guangzhou city (formerly Canton) in south China's Guangdong province.
With exhibitors and buyers from over 200 countries, it is deemed as one of the world’s largest trade fairs, exhibiting consumers items from electronics and textiles to vehicles and building materials.
Several buyers from Bangladesh, mostly looking for electronic goods or components, were seen roaming around the mega complex. “I am here for parts like refrigerator coils,” said Mir Abdur Razzaque, managing director of Dhaka-based Cooltech Manufacturing Industries Ltd.
