Mushfiqur Rahim continued his rich vein of form in the Dhaka Premier League (DPL), much to the delight of the title aspirants Mohammedan Sporting Club. After hitting 72 and 104 in his previous two matches, Mushfiqur came up with an unbeaten 51 which steered his side to a comprehensive seven-wicket win over Legends of Rupganj yesterday at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium.
While his century in the previous couldn’t win his team against Victoria, Mushfiqur made a clinical finish in the third game to help his side bounce back from the defeat. And it came against a team which was involved in a series of spat with Mohammedan in the last season.
Thanks a four-wicket haul of left arm spinner Naeem Islam Junior, Mohammedan bundled Rupganj out for 212 in 49.3 overs. Sri Lankan Upul Tharanga led the charge with 71 while Mushfiqur Rahim gave a finishing touch as the Motijhil outfit reached the winning target with 215 for three in 47 overs. Ariful Haque who was unbeaten on 24 off 17 alongside Mushfiqur Rahim, signed off the match with over-boundary of left arm spinner Taijul Islam.
Rupganj made a slow but steady start with the openers Mizanur Rahman and Zunaed Siddique adding 107 in 23.3 overs before the latter was the first batsman to be dismissed. Zunaed made 39 off 64. Mizanur followed him soon to leave the side 116 for two, after scoring 63, the highest score of his side. His 85-ball innings was studded with seven fours and two sixes.
The dismissal of the openers at the hands of left arm spinner Naeem Islam Junior left Rupganj in clueless state with no one was able to give any impetus to the innings. Mohammedan off-spinner Naeem Islam who ended with two for 38, dealt a middle order blow to extend the agony. Later fast medium bowler Habibur Rahman (three for 26) and Naeem Islam Junior cleaned up the tail to give their batsmen an easy target to chase.
Saykat Ali (34) and Ezaz Ahmed (26) combined for a 52-run in the opening stand to ease the pressure. The partnership was broken with the dismissal of Ezaz. Tharanga took over and got a support from in-form Mushfiqur Rahim with whom he shared a 106-run partnership for the third wicket stand. Tharanga was removed as the third batsman with 71 off 99, clubbing seven fours and one six. Mushfiqur however remained unbeaten, clattering three fours and two sixes in his 64 ball-51.
Murad Khan, Abu Haider Rony and Asif Ahmed picked up one wicket apiece for Rupganj.
