Bangladesh Bank yesterday instructed all the scheduled banks to upgrade the duration of maternity leave of women employees to six months, reports UNB.
It also asked them to follow the finance ministry’s order regarding the evaluation of female staff’s performance during the 6-month maternity leave.
In a circular issued by its Banking Rules and Policy Department (BRPD), the central bank has asked the banks to include the government order on sanctioning a six-month maternity leave for their women employees into their human resource management policy and also suggested evaluating women employees’ performance on the basis of that order.
It said the country’s half of the population is women. Their contribution to the national economic development is undeniable. The government has also been working for their development and empowerment.
As a result, success is being achieved in different fields including female education. The participation of women is increasing in different professions and in banking sector as well.
But it is being observed that during the maternity leave,
the performance of women employees are not properly evaluated by the bank management which is an impediment towards the development, improvement and empowerment of women.
“So, you are suggested to take into consideration the female employees’ last year’s performance or average performance of last three years (whichever is better) while evaluating their annual performance,” the circular sent to the managing directors and chief executive officers of the banks said.
