The law-enforcement agencies have detected clues and unearthed facts behind most of the recent killings and militant attacks conducted over bloggers and liberals in the country, senior police officials told BSS. They also found credible evidence of the involvement of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS), a student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, and its activists as well as other ultra fanatic militant outfits in such crimes. "We have already detected facts and clues of 17 out of 21 such heinous incidents since 2013," Asaduzzaman Mia, Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said. "Detective Branch (DB) has already detected 11 cases that took place in capital Dhaka and the charge-sheet for five have already been pressed" he said. The judgment for one case, he said, has been awarded by the court as well.
The court has given punishment to eight people, including capital punishment to two persons, in blogger Rajid Haider murder case. Besides, police also pressed charge-sheets against the accused of the attempt to murder of Asif Mohiuddin, killings of Wasiqur Rahman Babu and Khijir Khan and bomb attack on Hosney Dalan. "We have found involvement of Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) cadres in killing of bloggers as well as their instigations for other militants to commit the heinous crimes in a planned way in order to destabilize the country and the government," added DMP spokesperson and Chief of Counter Terrorism Unit, Monirul Islam.
Monirul Islam said a good number of arrestees involved in the killings of bloggers were found to be former and incumbent members of Chhatra Shibir, many of them have direct link to the banned militant outfit, Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT).
"Detained Shibir leaders- Mortuza Sabbir Faisal and Tariqul Islam- claimed responsibility for the murder of blogger Niladri Chatterjee Niloy after opening a Facebook account under the name of "Ansar Al Islam"," he also pointed out. Asaduzzamn Mia said they have successfully unearthed mystery of the killings of Bangladesh-born US citizen Avijit Roy, Niladri Chaterjee Nely, Assistant Police Inspector (ASI) Mohammad Ibrahim, Arefin Faisal Dipon as well as the recent double-murder in Kalabagan and the case of attempt to murder of Tutul at Mohammadpur. "We will submit chargesheet of Avijit Roy murder case soon after getting report from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) that has been assisting Bangladesh police in probing the murder," Monirul said. Investigation into the murder of Ananta Bijoy, who was brutally hacked to death in Sylhet, is also at the final stage, he added. "We have also arrested six criminals in blogger Niladri murder case, eight in Avijit killing case and five in Ananta murder case while three others in Babu murder case," the DMP commissioner stated.
