Kalabagan murders
‘Pattern Similar’

A forensic expert yesterday said there were similarities in the patterns of killing of USAID staffer Xulhaz Mannan and his friend Mahbub Tanay at Kalabagan on Monday with the murders of other bloggers and online activists in the country. Professional and trained killers have carried out the murders, Assistant Professor of the Forensic Department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), Dr Sohel Mahmud, told journalists after completing the post-mortem examination of Xulhaz and Tanay. Despite the findings of the forensic report, law enforcers are yet to make any headway in the case, rather the Bangladesh police chief said that it is not possible for them to provide security at every home and that the citizens also need to be conscious about their security. Meanwhile, Bangladesh chapter of al-Qaeda in the Indian Sub-Continent (AQIS), Ansar Al Islam, yesterday claimed the responsibility for the murder of Xulhaz Mannan and his friend Mahbub Tanay. AQIS made the claim on its Twitter account. The Twitter handle, that identified itself as an outlet of Ansar Al Islam, said its fighters have killed Xulhaz and Tanay, and termed the duo as "the pioneers of practicing and promoting homosexuality in Bangladesh”.
Earlier in the day, Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque, while talking to journalists at Kalabagan after visiting the residence of Xulhaz, said that he did not find any lapses in the police investigation and advised citizens to be conscious about security. “Every individual should have a sense of security of their own, security of their neighbours and also of their locality,” he said. “The Kalabagan killing is very well planned. We suspect the attackers did their homework prior to the murders.” Replying to a query, he said, “The patterns of the recent killings appear to be the same and it may be right to match them together. We are hopeful that we will identify the killers and bring them to book.” Dr Sohel said, “There are similarities in the attack on these two men with the killing of the online activist Nazimuddin. They are trained and professional killers and from the same group because they knew where and how to attack to quickly complete the killing.”
