The prices of vegetables and other essentials have almost doubled in all the kitchen markets of Kishoreganj town ahead of holy Ramzan, affecting the people of fixed and low income groups. Md Samsul Alam Shahin, a buyer, said the vendors have increased the prices of vegetables and other essential commodities ahead of Ramzan according their whims to make a windfall profit in the absence of proper monitoring of the kitchen market, he alleged.
Vegetable vendor Arju Mia of Puranthana Bazar in the town said they are charging high prices from the customers as the procuring cost is higher. The traders of the town attributed the high prices of different vegetables to lower supply and high demand in the markets.At Puranthana, Boro and Kachari kitchen markets, the biggest kitchen markets of the district town, it was found on Wednesday that vegetables were selling at high prices. Aubergine was selling at Tk 50 to Tk 60, lemon per score at Tk 30 to Tk 50 per kg, carrot at Tk 80 to Tk 90 a kg, bitter gourd (small) at Tk 60 to Tk 70 a kg and long beans at Tk 50 to Tk 60 a kg.
In Chandpur, with the advent of holy Ramzan, the prices of essentials have shot up in all the haats and bazaars of Chandpur.The shopkeepers would not say about the seasons behind the rise in the prices of essential commodities. But there is no dearth of any food items in the local markets.A kilogram of Hilsa fish is being sold at Tk 2,000 whereas its price was only Tk 1,200 or Tk 1,100 two days ago. Prices of all kinds of other fishes rui, katla, tilapia (hybrid), small fish, pangas (hybrid) -- have marked a rise by Tk 30 per kg yesterday. A kilogram of beef is being sold at Tk 420, which was sold at Tk 350 per kg a few days ago. Butchers attributed the high price to short supply of cow.
Mutton is now being sold at Tk 550 per kg whereas it was selling at Tk 450 per kg a few days ago. A small chicken (local) weighing 500 grams is being sold at Tk 250 to 275 per piece, broiler chicken at Tk 170 per kg against Tk 140 to Tk 150 per kg two days ago. Prices of vegetables have also shot up in all the markets. Cucumber is selling at Tk 50 per kg against Tk 40 per kg, brinjal at Tk 80 a kg whereas it was sold at Tk 50 to Tk 60 per kg only on Wednesday.
In Jhenidah, prices of essentials have soared ahead of holy month of Ramzan although there is ample supply of them in the market.
The essentials like sugar, beef, mutton, fish, chicken, oil, chick pea, lentils, auberigine (brinjal), potato, green chili, ginger, garlic, cucumber, lemon, onion, edible oil, dates, puffed rice have marked sharp rise in all the local markets of the district. Local sugar is being sold at Tk 38 to Tk 42 per kg, mutton at Tk 420 to Tk 500 per kg, beef at Tk 350 to Tk 400 per kg, broiler chicken at Tk 130 to Tk 180 per kg, local chicken at Tk 200 to Tk 300 per kilogram. Onion is selling at Tk 36 to Tk 42 per kg, lentils at Tk 80 to Tk 110 per kg, green chili at Tk 50 to Tk 60 per kg, garlic at Tk 80 to Tk 90 per kg, ginger at Tk 120 to Tk 140 per kg.
