A group of anti-tobacco campaigners yesterday staged human chain in front of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) demanding imposition of high tax on tobacco product, reports BSS.
The human chain started at 11am where over 15 anti-tobacco organizations participated, said a press release.
Later, a delegation handed over a memorandum to NBR Chairman Nojibur Rahman to forward it to Finance Minister A M A Muhith.
In the memorandum, they demanded an effective taxation policy instead of existing tax structures.
They also made proposal to increase the price of tobacco products through imposing effective taxation taking consideration of per capita income and inflation rate.
The anti-tobacco campaigners suggested for at least 70 per cent specific excise tax on maximum retail price (MRP) of each packet of cigarette by cancelling slab-based taxation.
Besides, 40 per cent specific excise tax on bidi was also demanded by lifting tariff value.
In addition, they also recommended 70 per cent excise tax on smokeless tobacco products like gul, jorda.
