BNP Vice Chairman Abdullah Al Noman yesterday alleged that the government is showing people a bioscope of mockery in the name of election, reports UNB. Speaking at a discussion, he also alleged that the Election Commission did not take any strong stance to make the third phase of Union Parishad (UP) polls free and fair. “Even, the Election Commission didn’t cancel elections at the centres where votes were rigged massively,” the BNP leader said.
Jatiyatabadi Zia Samajkalyan Parishad arranged the discussion at the Jatiya Press Club demanding the release of detained journalists Shafik Rehman, Mahmudur Rahman and Shawkat Mahmud and opposition leaders.
Criticising Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad for his remark that the third phase of UP election was fairer than the previous ones, Noman said, “I was ashamed of his comment. Did Kazi feel shame?
The BNP leader said there were gunfights at most polling stations during the third phase of UP polls on Saturday. He urged BNP people to get united to force the government to hold a fair election under a non-party administration and thus restore democracy in the country. “We’ve to stand raising our heads and put up a strong resistance against unjust and misdeeds.” Speaking at another programme, BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan alleged that the government is yet to ensure due compensation for the victims of Rana Plaza tragedy.
Mentioning that the amount of compensation fixed in the country’s current labour law for a worker who gets killed, injured or maimed is very low, the BNP leader urged the government to amend the law upgrading with international standard.
Nazrul, also a renowned labour leader, made the demand while speaking at a human chain programme arranged by the IndustriALL Bangladesh Council in front of the Jatiya Press Club, marking the third anniversary of Rana Plaza incident.
He said a dreadful incident like Rana Plaza one is unlikely to take place again if the owners of industries play a responsible role and the labour organisations are made stronger.
