CHITTAGONG: The indefinite strike in the Karnaphuli River enforced by the vessel workers continued for the fourth consecutive day yesterday, reports BSS.
The indefinite strike kept 51 mother vessels waiting at outer anchorage of the Karnaphuli River for delivering goods.
The importers underwent unbearable sufferings as all lighter vessels stopped running their activities because of the strike.
The river vessels, including goods, sand and oil-laden ones, also stayed off the waterways on the fourth day as usual.
Meanwhile, an agitation procession was brought out by the Bangladesh Water Transport Workers Federation in the port city yesterday evening.
Khurshed Alam, joint secretary of Water Transport Workers Federation, reiterated that the strike will continue until their demands are met.
He told the journalists that said they will inform the government of their decision tonight as the government assured to solve the issue within May 10 next.
The strike, enforced jointly by Bangladesh Water Transport Workers Federation and Bangladesh River Vessel Workers Federation, began Wednesday midnight.
The vessel workers called the strike to press home their 15-point demand, including raising their minimum basic wage to Tk 10,000 from the existing Tk 4,150, giving them formal appointment, issuing identity cards and service book, and ensuring their social security.
