Shafik Rehman put on fresh 5-day remand

A Dhaka court yesterday put eminent journalist Shafik Rehman on a fresh five-day remand for further interrogation in a case filed over an alleged plot to abduct and kill Prime Ministers son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, reports UNB.
Judge Mahmudul Hasan of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrates court gave the order as senior Assistant Superintendent of Police of the Detective Branch (DB) Hasan Arafat, also the investigation officer of the case, produced Shafik Rehman before the court after completion of a 5-day remand and sought a fresh seven-day remand for the veteran journalist. The court also rejected a plea filed by Shafik Rehman against the remand prayer, his lawyer Jainul Abedin Mesbah told reporters.
Earlier on Saturday morning, detectives arrested Shafik Rehman, former editor of the Bangla daily Jaijaidin. The court later placed him on a five-day remand in a case filed over plotting to abduct and murder Prime Ministers son Joy in the USA.
On Tuesday, Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Monirul Islam told reporters that Shafik Rehman has admitted to having several meetings with people convicted by a US court for bribing a former FBI official to get information about Joy. Some media also reported that the journalist also confessed to his link with the plot against the PMs son.
