The country's largest ever limestone quarry has been discovered at Badalgachhi in Naogaon district, State minister for power, energy and mineral resources Nasrul Hamid yesterday, reports BSS. "The limestone quarry has been spread over a 50 square kilometre area in the district," he told newsmen at his ministry office at Bangladesh secretariat. Nasrul said the state-run Geological Survey of Bangladesh (GSB) discovered the mine after two years of continuous efforts and finally they found it after drilling 2,270 feet down. Once commercial production starts, the limestone will cater local demand for clinker - a material used in cement production among other purposes, he said. Bangladesh will not have to import limestone further and can save Taka 1,000 crore annually, the state minister said. He said a limestone mine was also discovered in Joypurhat district, which was much deeper and it was abandoned because it was not commercially viable to lift the limestone from the quarry with the available technology in 1961. “We are trying to begin the work in the limestone project again because we hope to make the scheme commercially profitable one,” the state minister added.
