GAZIPUR: A court here yesterday sentenced four people, including two siblings, to death for killing a schoolboy Mamun at Pubail in the city on August 2004.
Judge of Additional District and Sessions Judge Court-1 Md Fazle Elahi Bhuiyan handed down the verdict yesterday.
The convicts are Mohammed Iqbal Hossain Bhuiyan, 32, and his brother Md Shakil Bhuiyan, 30, sons of Abdul Hamid Bhuiyan; Zaman Sarker, 32, son of Afzal Hossain Sarker, residents of Haribari Tech area of Pubail; and Abu Sayem, 34, son of Mujibur Rahman, haling from Latabor village of Kurigram district. The court also fined them Tk 10,000 each.
The Judge, however, acquitted three other accused Uzzal Sarker, Somun Khan and Afzal Hossain as the allegations brought against them could not be proved.
According to the prosecution, convict Zaman had put forward a proposal to marry Rokhsana, daughter of Hasan Khandker, resident of the area. But, Rokhsana’s family turned down the proposal.
Following the issue, Zaman abducted Rokhsana’s brother Mamum, 15, a class eight student of local Bhadun High School, on August 10, 2004.
Later, the victim’s father filed a general diary with Joydebpur Police Station. On August 13, three days after abduction, police recovered Mamun’s body from a septic tank adjacent to local Shahjahan Bhuiyan’s house. The victim’s father then filed a murder case with the police station against seven people.
The case was later handed over to the CID. The investigation officer and inspector of CID Sultan Mahmud submitted the chargesheet against them. After examining the records and witnesses, the judge handed down the verdict yesterday.
