Call to build crime-free society thru community policing

Speakers at a community level participatory discussion opined that wide-ranging community participation is very important for making the community policing forum effective and meaningful for the sake of building crime-free society, reports BSS
In the wake of gradually rising trend of social crimes especially addiction of drugs and its trafficking and trading, they viewed only the law- enforcers or any other single organization isn't capable to uproot the crimes. So, collective efforts of police and community people are needed, they added.
The observations came at a meeting of Community Policing Forum (CPF) members held at Damkura Union Parishad Shaheed Minar premises under Paba Upazila of the district yesterday afternoon. Light House Consortium and Community Legal Services Programme jointly organized the meeting in association with Improved Justice and Legal Aid Services (IJLAS) project. US Government's Maxwell Stamp (PLC), British Council and Center for Effective Dispute resolution supported the event.
With CPF Member Sadeque Hossain in the chair, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Paba Police Station Shariful Islam, Upazila Women Affairs Officer Hosney Laila and Light House Upazila Coordinator Sanwar Hossain and Paralegal Abdul Bari spoke on the occasion.
The speakers observed that united efforts of police and people on mutual trust and confidence can curb anti-social activities to build a crime-free society through improving law and order everywhere in the society.
They put emphasis on breaking down longstanding barrier of mistrust between police and people and explore opportunities of community policing for strengthening police effectiveness and ensuring citizens' safety through local initiatives.
OC Shariful Islam said the community based policing had been introduced in the upazila with a noble view, but the community people should take the responsibility of making it effective.
As a whole, police-citizens joint patrolling and drives against the social crimes are the main objective of the community based policing and there is no alternative to activating it to free the society from the crimes.
"If you give us authentic information about the criminals and other anti- social elements, we will put in our level best efforts to bring those to book," he reminded the community people.
He stressed on improving police-citizen relation through building trust, partnership and information sharing to address root causes of crimes.
Shariful Islam underscored the need for proactive attitude of police officers for strengthening the community policing movement involving the local communities to resolve the petty problems for a peaceful society.
