Leela Samson set to perform in Dhaka

Prominent Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer, instructor and writer from India, Leela Samson and her troupe ‘Spanda’ is all set to perform in Dhaka. Organised by Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA), in association with Shadhona and Srishti Cultural Center, Leela Samson will perform at a three-day Bharatanatyam festival titled ‘Roop Bahulya Bharatanatyam Nritya Utsab’ that will start today. Besides, she will conduct a workshop on Bharatanatyam dance.
Today, on the first day of the festival, Leela and her troupe Spanda will present Bharanatyam at the National Theatre Hall auditorium of BSA, while they will perform at the Bangladesh National Museum next two consecutive days.
On the other hand, Leela Samson will conduct a Bharatanatyam dance workshop at BSA from April 24-28.
Born on May 6, 1951, Leela Samson started her career as a Bharatanatyam soloist. She taught at Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, Delhi, and Gandharva Mahavidyalaya, Delhi. Over the years she has performed across India and abroad including Europe, Africa and the Americas.
In 1995, Samson formed Spanda, a dance group to review the traditional vocabulary of Bharatanatyam. Two documentary films, ‘Sanchari’ and ‘The Flowering Tree’, have been made on her works. She made her cinematic acting debut in 2015 through the Tamil film ‘OK Kanmani’ directed by Mani Ratnam.
She received the Padma Shri (1990), the Sanskriti, Nritya Choodamani, Kalaimamani (2005) given by the Government of Tamil Nadu, and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award (1999–2000) for contributions to Bharatanatyam.
