BB heist probe panel submits report

STAFF REPORTER

The Bangladesh Bank (BB) heist probe committee handed over the interim investigation report to the government yesterday.
Head of the committee, former BB governor Mohammed Farashuddin, handed over the report at 6.30 pm to finance minister AMA Muhith at his office in the Secretariat. BB governor Fazle Kabir and the two other members of the committee—professor of computer science and engineering at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, Mohammad Kaykobad, and additional secretary of the Bank and Financial Institutions Division, Gokul Chand Das—were present as well.

Refusing to reveal anything about the report, Farashuddin told reporters that since it was a big incident, the government would brief the media about it. He said that the government would examine the report. “So you will have to give it some time,” he added.
Muhith, however, said he was yet to go through the report.
On March 15, the government had formed the three-member committee, with Farashuddin as the head, to investigate the USD 81 million heist.
The panel was scheduled to submit a preliminary report within 30 days and a full report within 75.
The committee investigated how the illegal payment instructions were issued from BB and to whom.
It examined whether the steps taken by the central bank to prevent the payment were appropriate. It also evaluated the reasons behind the alleged suppression of information about the heist from higher authorities.
