The High Court yesterday asked the Principal of Udayan Higher Secondary School in Dhaka to submit a report on the steps taken against the teacher responsible for allegedly torturing Jamiul Islam Nadim, a Class VIII student of the school.
The Principal will have to submit a report before the court within a month after conducting an investigation into the incident. In a suo motu move, a vacation bench of the HC, comprising Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice Md Salim, also issued a rule asking the authorities to explain in four weeks why appropriate legal action should not be taken against the teacher for the torture.
The Education Secretary, Director General of the Directorate of Primary and Higher Secondary Education, Chairman of Dhaka Education Board, Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka, Principal of Udayan School and the Managing Director of its Governing Body have been made respondents to the reply.
The HC bench also asked the authorities concerned to take the necessary steps so that the victim could attend class without any obstruction. The court came up with the directives following a report published on April 19 in a national daily stating that Jamshedul Alam, a teacher of the school, called Jamiul Islam Nadim from a class room and beat him mercilessly. Nadim fell sick after the beating.
Meanwhile, the same bench of the HC also directed the government to take necessary steps to provide treatment for the 10-year-old Madrasa student, Abujar Rahman, who was tortured by his teacher at Magura for four months. The Deputy Commissioner of the district has been asked to take necessary steps for his treatment. It also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain in four weeks why appropriate legal action should not be taken against the teacher responsible for torturing Abujar.
The Education Secretary, Chairman of Madrasa Education Board, Deputy Commissioner of Magura and Principal of the Madrasa have been made respondents to the reply.
The HC bench, in a suo motu move, came up with the order following a report published in another national daily that stated Abujar, a student of Bagharpara’s Darilakur Madrasa, had been physically tortured by his teacher, Jahangir Hossain, since his admission three years ago.
When the police rescued the boy from Magura bus stand on Monday night, his left leg was still tied to an iron shackle and a piece of wood, the report alleged.
Supreme Court lawyers, Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal and Barrister Abu Khaled Al Mamun, placed both the reports before the HC bench seeking necessary orders in this regard.
