Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #5

Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #5

This series continues to be exactly what fans of both Batman and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles could want. James Tynion IV has a great take on the characters from both worlds and is seamlessly combining them. Seeing Batman join forces with the Turtles is working brilliantly. Despite how much fun it is to see, the clock is ticking for the Ninja Turtles. We’re starting to see the toll being taken on them, and it’ll be a race against time to stop the bad guys and figure out a way to get the Turtles (and Master Splinter) back home.
After seeing the typical superhero misunderstanding fight, the heroes have finally figured out they’re fighting on the same side. Fighting Shredder or Ra’s al Ghul alone would be a dangerous task. The two together make a deadly combination. Having resources such as the Foot Clan and League of Assassins, it almost seems these two would be unstoppable. Because of their ways and arrogance, chances are they’ll end up sabotaging each other due to their own greed.
Freddie Williams II art fits the book perfectly. Looking over the pages, you have to assume he’s having a blast drawing all these characters. Whenever a “new” character is brought into this book, it’s a joy to see. Because there’s crazy things happening, Williams is getting to unleash with the art and do things to characters we wouldn’t normally expect.
The pacing of the story does slow down a tiny bit in this issue. We’re quickly approaching the conclusion and a couple more pieces need to be put in place. It’s not a jarring shift except we’re eagerly awaiting the final confrontation. Still, the set up here does allow for some cool moments.
This is a story you don’t want to see end. I didn’t think combining the characters and worlds of both Batman and the Ninja Turtles could work this well. James Tynion IV and Freddie Williams II must be having a blast working on this series because it’s a blast to read. Sadly, we’re now in the place where we’re eagerly waiting for the next issue but also sad it’s the finale of the miniseries. This is what comic book crossovers should be like. Hopefully we’ll get more.
