13 killed as buses collide in Rangpur

Thirteen people were killed and 47 injured when two buses collided head-on on the Rangpur-Dinajpur highway, at Ikorchali in Taraganj upazila yesterday.
Abdul Latif, OC of Taraganj Police Station, and locals said the accident took place between a Thakurgaon-bound coach of Symon Exclusive and a Rangpur-bound bus of Treepti Paribahan.
When the two buses were crossing Ikorchali around 10am, a tyre of Symon Exclusive burst and the driver lost control of the vehicle and hit the other bus, leaving six people dead on the spot and injuring 54 others.
Six of the injured died on the way to Rangpur Medical College Hospital while one succumbed to his injuries at the hospital at night, police and hospital sources said.
Of the injured, the condition of 12 was stated to be critical.
Three of the deceased were identified as Mohammad Ali (30), Abdul Matin (32) of Sayedpur in Nilphamari, and Chandan Roy of Bhusirbandar in Dinajpur.
Prof. Zakir Hossain, principal of Rangpur Medical College, and AKM Barkatulla, director of the hospital, said the injured were being treated.
Officials of the district administration and senior police officers visited the accident site.
Fire Services and Civil Defence personnel, alogn with locals, helped in ferrying the injured in ambulances to the hospital.
The Rangpur district administration and the Taraganj upazila administration decided to pay Tk 9,000 for each of the deceased and Tk 3,000 for each of the injured people. The district administration decided to provide Tk 5,000 and the upazila administration Tk. 4,000 for the deceased. For the injured, the district administration decided to pay Tk 2,000 and the upazila administration Tk 1,000.
Rahat Anwar, deputy commissioner of Rangpur, Dr Mahaboom-ul-Alam, ADC (General) Zillufar Sultana, UNO of Taraganj upazila, and other officials of the district administration visited the hospital to hand over the amount to the families of the victims.
