Police in a drive yesterday arrested four people for their suspected link for killing of a muezzin in Islampur area of Old Dhaka.
They were identified as Mosharraf Hossain, junior muezzin of Islampur’s Jhabbu Khanam Mosque, its caretaker or Khadem Md Habibur Rahman, 20, and Hafez Tofazzal Hossain aka Tazinur and Sarwar Halim.
Shahen Shah, assistant commissioner of Kotowali police, said the suspects were arrested in separate drives in different parts of the country early yesterday.
Earlier on April 4, Billal Hossain, 57, a muezzin was found dead on the stairs inside a mosque at Old Dhaka’s Islampur.
The killers killed the muezzin to take control and grab the funds of the mosque, police said quoting the arrested alleged killers.
There were thirty three shops in the two floor of the mosque and the deceased were collecting Tk 42,000 per month as rent and another 10 to 12,000 from the donation box, he added.
Besides, the mosque was earning money from different religious programmes. But as the mosque had no committee, Belal deposited the money in his personnel account, the police officer further said.
Khadem Habib killed Muazin Belal to control the mosque and its fund Belal was giving the money to different people on interest, he said.
Meanwhile, a court has granted police three days to quiz the three suspects in custody for the murder of Billal.
Mosharraf Hossain, Md Habibur Rahman, 20, and Hafez Tofazzal Hossain aka Tazinur were brought to Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court around noon on Wednesday.
Inspector Parvez Hossain, investigation officer of the case of Kotwali police, had sought seven days' remand but Metropolitan Magistrate Sajjadur Rahman granted three, said court police SI Sharif Safayet Hossain.
“No one represented the suspects in the court,” he told the reporters.
Police said in the remand plea that the knife used to kill the 57-year-old muezzin on April 4 had been recovered.
Police, however, did not produce Sarwar Halim before the court, another suspect arrested in connection with murder.
