At least 20 villages in Nalitabari upazila of the district have been flooded as 200-meters of a flood control embankment on the Bhogai River collapsed yesterday morning due to heavy rain and onrush of water from the upstream for the last few days, reports UNB from Sherpur.
Several thousand people of those villages, including Nalitabari, Marichpuran, Jogania, Khalbhanga, Nalkura, Kharkhariakanda, Gojakura, Banshkanda, Kayarpar and Kapashia under Kalashpar union, have been marooned due to the flashflood.
Besides, the roads and seedbeds of the villages went under water and fishes of around 50 ponds were washed way by the sudden flood.
Abdul Hakim, a resident of Khalbhanga village, urged the government to take necessary steps for repairing the embankment immediately.
Ashrafuzzaman, Nalitabari union parishad chairman, said the Khalbhanga point is most dangerous point of the dam. As the authorities concerned always dump sand bags to stop the embankment collapse it does not sustain for a long time. He also urged the higher authorities concerned to take immediate steps.
Mokhlesur Rahman, a gauge reader of Water Development Board, said a portion of the embankment collapsed as Bhogai River has been flowing 58 cm above the danger level since Wednesday night from due to incessant rain for the last few days.
