Shafik issue to be faced legally, politically: BNP

The BNP has decided to face the issue of senior journalist Shafik Rehman’s arrest both legally and politically. Rehman was arrested on Saturday in a case filed over a “conspiracy to kill Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy”. The decision was taken at a meeting of the party’s senior leaders held with Chairperson Khaleda Zia in the chair. A team led by party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was also formed to amass details about the ruling party allegation against the pro-BNP intellectual.
“The team will plan the party’s stance over the issue after collecting all necessary documents and information within a couple of days,” said a standing committee member, who was present at the meeting, preferring to anonymity.
He said the party’s formal stance would be announced soon at a media briefing after collecting details about Rehman. Issues such as Rehman is a British citizen and that the US federal organisation FBI is connected to the case will be taken into consideration, he added.  Another leader said the chairperson listened to the views of the fellow colleagues patiently and suggested them to face the issue politically. The party leaders opined that the government arrested Shafik Rehman with a political motive to divert the peoples’ attention from the Bangladesh Bank reserve heist. Party standing committee members, vice chairs, joint secretaries, advisers and organsing secretaries attended the two and half-an-hour-long meeting that began at 9:30pm at Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office.
