DCCI for lowering VAT on construction materials

Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) leaders urged the government to lower VAT on construction materials to bring the cost of housing at affordable level.
The rate of interest on home loan is too high in our country whereas housing or accommodation is one of our basic needs. The government should slash the interest rate, said DCCI President Hossain Khaled.
He made this observation when DCCI Board of Directors called on Minister for Housing & Public Works Engineer Mosharraf Hossain at the ministryyesterday.
DCCI President said that due to lack of gas connection, flat and apartment sales decreased remarkably in recent times. He said that government may divide the city into several parts and supply Titas gas to some parts and supply LPG to some parts through pipe line.
He also proposed to cut high registration fee, stamp duty, gain tax in case of selling used flat and apartments.
The Chamber leader also urged the government to reduce 15 per cent VAT on construction materials to mitigate the cost of doing business in this sector.
Hossain Khaled recommended for relocating leather processing units, garment factories to a specialized economic zones out of Dhaka which will ensure planned industrialization, better working place for the workers and pollution free livable city.
Minister for Housing and Public Works Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, MP said that government has planned to build 30,000 flats under public-private initiative in City’s Mirpur area.
“We should popularize use of LPG in households to reduce pressure on limited natural gas. He also said that to ensure “Accommodation for All” rate of interest on house loan should be in single digit,” Mosharraf Hossain.
DCCI Vice President K. Atique-e-Rabbani, FCA, Directors Hossain Akhtar, Kamrul Islam, FCA, Md. Alauddin Malik, Muktar Hossain Chowdhury, Salim Akter Khan and DCCI Secretary General AHM Rezaul Kabir were also present during the meeting.
