Opener Tamim Iqbal smashed a century as Abahani Limited beat Prime Bank Cricket Club by 75 runs in their one-off practice match ahead of the Dhaka Premier League (DPL) in Fatullah yesterday.
Tamim clattered 139 off 90 that studded with five sixes as well as 18 boundaries before being caught by Sabbir Rahman off Shuvagata Hom Chowdhury.
Playing such innings after 20 days without practice, Tamim Iqbal said, “The way I have played I want to perform such way throughout the tournament. For what reason Abahani took me for their team I’ll try to give back to them. If I could do that I’ll then think myself successful.”
“I took bat in hand after 20 days. Such an innings will provide me enormous confidence.  If any batsman makes runs then his confident level boosts up. Such run is good for a team. Hopefully I could keep its continuation throughout the tournament,” he also said.
Tamim aided by Mosaddek Hossain Saikat (70) and Avishek Mittra (34), who gave a good ground for Abahani as the winners compiled 322 for 9 in 50 overs.
For the DPL, Abahani formed a well-balanced team with the blend of experienced and youngsters, where ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, pace sensation Taskin Ahmed, Jubair Hossain Likhon, Saqlain Sojib, Nazmul Hossain Shanto, Abul Hasan Raju, Avishek Mitra, Taposh Baisha, Amitab Kumar Nayan, Abu Bakar Siddique, Liton Kumar.
 In this regard, hard-hitter opener said, “The team has been quite excellent. It has all sorts of combination. Hopefully if we could perform together well we could be able to make Abahani ‘champions’.”
“We all know that Abahani-Mohammedan mean big teams. There are other big teams, who also formed their teams to be champion. But Abahani-Mohammedan players’ attitude and their on-field environment remain different than other teams,” he told reporters at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium.
Tamim, who returned home from Saudi Arab after performing Umrah Hajj, said that there is no alternative to have performed well in field for becoming champions.
“Actually everything depends on how we perform in the field. It is possible to bring the result in favour of us if we could perform well in the field. If we could perform as per our capability, in that case, the result will come in favour of us,” he thinks.
“We’re of course strong side on paper. In BPL, our team, Chittagong Vikings, was also strong enough but we became sixth. Actually there is no gain to make calculation on paper. We all have to play well in ground. Then we could be brought result in favour of us.”
Defending champion Prime Bank managed to score 247 with Mehedi Maruf making 72 off 89. He was supported by Yasir Rabbi 53 off 48 with the help of five sixes.
Jubair Hossain Likhon took four wickets for 60 in his 10 overs. Taskin Ahmed bowled seven overs and conceded 28 runs without any wicket.
