DPL clubs in dilemma with chucking issue

While the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) emphasises on to be harsh on bowlers with suspected action in the Dhaka Premier League (DPL), the clubs are yet to be ascertained which method would be applied to find out the chucking problems.
They are due to get a clear picture on the ‘ever escalating’ problem in the meeting of the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM) but they had to be disappointed. The guardian of the Dhaka cricket didn’t clear the air in this regard, leaving the clubs in a state of confusion.
The BCB vowed to form a technical committee to find out the chucker but it is yet to be materialised. The clubs even didn’t know who are likely to be the part of this committee and how they will work with regards to identifying the chucking problems whereas just two days are left to start the DPL.
“It is not clear how they will determine one bowler as chucker. There is no clear guideline in this regard,” said the Kalabagan Krira Chakra coach Jalal Ahmed Chowdhury.
The veteran coach also went on to say, “Some bowlers who are identified as chucker by the ICC will take part in the league. It meant that these bowlers action are illegal. I can’t understand how you will determine one chucker when bowlers with suspected action will still take part in the league.”
According to Chowdhury, these bowlers should be given time to wok on their bowling action before they take the league as the platform of assessing them.
Fast bowler Taskin Ahmed, left arm spinner Arafat Sunny and off-spinner Sanjit Shaha, an Under-19 bowler, have been reported with suspected bowling action of late.
“There should be a guideline to see on how accurate action they are bowling in the league. If they cross the legal action in that case, the umpires should be given the right them to call it ‘no-ball’ which could make them aware of their action. It is important but nobody tells anything about it clearly,” Chowdhury added.
“On the other hand, those bowlers who are yet to be suspected will bowl according how they are used to bowl. The umpires and technical committee will determine if they are right.”
Coach, manager and captain from every club were present during the CCDM meeting yesterday where they were appraised about the bylaws of the league. But the representative of the club was keen to know about how the chucking problem will be identified.
CCDM coordinator Amin Khan however tried to explain: “Umpires will be there to identify the chucker. The technical committee will review their action upon the report of the umpires. Then they will take the necessary steps of clearing the bowlers’ action.  The chucking problem remains epidemic in the domestic cricket, specially in the first division and second division league but there is no proper system of identifying it. It prompted even the premier league clubs to field a bowler with suspected action.
Some premier league club officials also admitted the fact publicly, pushing the ball to the court of the BCB.
The BCB however was forced to look into the matter once some of the national bowlers were reported with suspected action. A number of the bowlers of Bangladesh in the past were identified as chucker but it wasn’t BCB’s cup of tea until the incident of Taskin Ahmed and Arafat Sunny.
In the wake of the situation, the BCB president Nazmul Hassan Papon stressed on taking a tough stance on chucking problem.
The BCB though has reservation about accepting Taskin as chucker, match referee Roqibul Hassan raised a doubt about his action some two years ago. Hassan also was certain about the problem of Arafat Sunny but four years ago, no one paid heed to it.
With the BCB sending a strong message regarding chucking issue, the clubs are now in dilemma what they would do if the board itself doesn’t set any guideline.
Meanwhile, the fixture of the DPL was released for first three rounds  yesterday. Three matches will be held on the opening day on April 22 at different venues across the city. Defending champions Prime Bank Cricket Club will take on Gazi Group Cricketers at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. Primer Doleshwar Sporting Club will play against Cricket Coaching School at BKSP-3 while Abahani Limited face off Kalabagan Krira Chakra at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium.
