The Detective Brach (DB) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police seized 12,000 cartons of date-expired raisins and 6,000 cartons dried dates from the city’s Batali Road area yesterday and sealed off a cold storage.
A team of DB police led by Md Kamaruzzaman, assistant commissioner of DB (CMP-North) conducted the drive around 2pm.
When contacted, SM Tanvir Arafat, additional deputy commissioner (DB-CMP), told The Independent quoting Md Kamaruzzaman, “A total of 12,000 cartons of date expired raisins and 6,000 cartons of date-expired dates were seized during the drive.”
During the drive, a mobile court headed by Executive Magistrate Ashraful Alam sentenced four people to different terms in jail.
The four are SK Dutta, caretaker of the cold storage, and three buyers Dalon Barua, Mahabubur Rahman, and Nazim Uddin.
Dutta was sentenced to one year jail term and fined Tk 50,000 while the buyers were sentenced to six months jail term.
The court also directed the authorities concerned to cancel the licence of the importer.
“Although the three buyers knew that the dry fruits were date expired and yet came to buy those, the court sentenced them to jail,” said Md Kamaruzzaman.
