Khaleda challenges trial court order in graft case
BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday filed two separate petitions before the High Court, challenging the legality of a trial court order that had rejected her two petitions in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case. One petition seeks fresh cross-examination of the investigation officer of the Zia Charitable Trust graft case, while the other wants scrutiny of the case diary. Lawyers opined that the HC is likely to begin hearing on the petitions within a day or two.
After filing the petitions, Barrister Raghib Rauf Chowdhury, one of the counsel for Khaleda, told reporters that Khaleda prayed to the HC to stay the trial proceedings against her in the graft case. Citing from the petitions, he said the IO of the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case, Harunur Rashid, was withdrawn from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in 2005 for incompetence. Rashids statement as an IO in the case is not acceptable, the lawyer added. On Sunday, a Dhaka court rejected the two petitions filed by Khaleda -- one for cross-examining the investigation officer of the case again and the other to show the case document under Section 172 (2) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). The court rejected the petitions as it found no ground.
