In a bid to assuage Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's dissatisfaction over the altered appearance of her ancestral home, the cultural affairs ministry is going to restore its original look. The archaeology department, in an attempt to restore the 135-year-old ancestral house of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, had changed its original look completely in 2010, which had angered the Premier when she had gone to visit the house. The cultural affairs ministry has appointed Abu Sayeed M Ahmed, an expert architect, to restore the original look of the house where Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur was born. Abu Sayeed M Ahmed, known for restoring the ‘Baro Sardar Bari’ at Sonargaon, has prepared a proposal outlining the details of the original look and presented it before a Cabinet meeting, seeking the Prime Minister’s attention. A Cabinet minister, on condition on anonymity, said the PM was initially not interested to go through the presentation, but agreed to look at it following a request by cultural affairs minister Asaduzzaman Noor.
In his presentation, Abu Sayeed M Ahmed assured
the PM that they would be able to restore the original look of the house. He told her that the requisite materials were available here.
After viewing the presentation, the Premier said she would gave permission to restore the house after consulting her relatives, as she was not the sole heir to the property.
“We’ll need at least six months to complete the restoration of the house,” Abu Sayeed M Ahmed told The Independent.
He said the great-grandfather of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had built this house 135 years ago with local materials. He said the house, known as ‘Kanchari Ghor,’ is a listed monument of the archaeology department.
Noor said the ancient house is part of the country’s heritage.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who would later emerge as the Father of the Nation, was born in Tungipara on March 17, 1920.  On August 15, 1975, just a few years after he had spearheaded Bangladesh’s liberation from Pakistan, Bangabandhu was murdered, along with most of his family members, in a coup by a group of disgruntled army officers at his home in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi.
