DPL teams yet to sign overseas players

Sports Reporter

Even though the balance of the Dhaka Premier Division (DPL) clubs remained almost same, they were unable to pick up their sought-after players through ‘players by choice’ system. Therefore a loophole was surfaced, a thing that they are bound to plague through quality foreign players.
While some clubs get quality batsmen and spinners, there was dearth of quality pacers. Some clubs manage to acquire quality pacer and batsmen but they didn’t get quality spinner. Other clubs have got spinner, pacer and batsman but they didn’t get quality opening batsman.
And so, all the clubs are chasing the desired players through their local and foreign agents in a bid to fill the void before the start of the campaign.
But they are facing a torrid period to bring up the quality foreign players as beside the bilateral series, the domestic competitions in some major counties have also been started across the world.
In India, Indian Premier League (IPL), the third largest competition after 50-over and 20-over World Cup, was being going on in full swing. The county cricket competition in England has already started. Even the domestic competitions in Pakistan, Sri Lanka and South Africa have also set in.
For these reasons, some clubs could not get the players they aspire to. Even the big clubs are facing problem to manage quality overseas players for their respective team.
Mamun Hossain, assistant coach of Abahani Limited said that they are trying to bring an off spinner-cum-batsman.
“We’ve quality batsmen, pacers but there is no quality off-spinner in the squad. And so, we’re trying to bring a spin all-rounder so we could use him as middle-order batsman to get extra benefit,” said Mamun.
“We’ve talked to several players including Pakistan’s Ashar Zaidi and Sri Lanka’s Chamara Kapugedera. But the final deal is yet to be made. Hopefully it will be known within next two days,” Mamun told The Independent.
Mohammedan Sporting Club on the other hand are looking for an all-rounder. In this regard, Mohammedan head coach, Sohel Islam said, “We’re strong in spin and have good batting depth. But it would be better for us if we can bring an all-rounder who also can bat at the top. Nothing is finalized though,”
Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club coach Anwar Hossain Monir shared the same sentiment and stated, “We’d talked to Ravi Bopara and other English player but none of them could come due to their county stint. We’re searching players who can play the whole season for us. Although Zimbabwe and Afghanistan players are available, our first priority is Sri Lankan players.”
