Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed yesterday said the US was violating human rights of people in different countries by interfering in their politics.
“When such a country (US) speaks that human rights are being violated in Bangladesh, it is nothing but ridiculous,” he told journalists in the capital yesterday.
On Wednesday, the US, in its 2015 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices, had claimed that extrajudicial killings, forced disappearances, killing of secular bloggers and others by groups espousing extremist views, restrictions on online speech and the press were the most significant human rights problems in Bangladesh.
Tofail also criticised the US report for failing to mention the gross violation of human rights during the three-month-long violent anti-government programme sponsored by the BNP-Jamaat combine. The AL leader said BNP-Jamaat had wanted to destroy the spirit of Liberation War by killing Bangabandhu, but they eventually failed to do so.
