2 killed in separate incidents
Two people were killed and four others were injured in separate incidents in the district yesterday morning.
The victims were identified as Azizur Rahman, 47, son of Fazlul Hoque hailing from Mirpur area of Dhaka and CNG taxi driver Mofizur Rahman,34, son of Abul Kashem, a resident of Mongolkhali area under Raozan thana in the district. Police said a micro-bus carrying tourists collided headed on with a covered van at Hasondondi area on Chittagong-Cox’s bazaar road under Chandanaish upazila that left five people including Azizur Rahman injured.
Locals brought them to Chandanaish upazila health complex but the attending doctors declared Azizur Rahman dead after admission. The other injured persons are out of danger, police added. In the second incident, local people found the body of a CNG taxi driver Mofiz hanging from a tree branch at Ramzan Ali hat area under Raozan upazila of the district at 7am yesterday.  Police said it is a mysterious death and the cause of the death could be ascertained after postmortem. Two separate cases were filed with the respective police stations in this connection.

Memorial meeting held
A memorial meeting for Phanybhushan Chowdhury, an IGP-equivalent police official, a former member of the Public Service Commission and a secretary, was held at Dhakeshwari Temple in the capital yesterday.
People from all walks of lives, including bureaucrats, academicians, relatives and journalists, attended the function which was followed by prayers and lunch, said a press release. Phanybhushan Chowdhury, a confirmed bachelor, died of cancer on March 26. He was cremated at his village in Chatak, Sunamganj.
Chairman of Public Service Commission (PSC) Ekram Ahmed, Chairman of National Board of Revenue (NBR) Nazibur Rahman, PSC Member Uzzal Bikash Datta, Law Secretary Zahirul Haq Dulal, CHT Affairs Secretary Naba Bikram Kishore Tripura, Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Asaduzzaman Miah, additional IGP Moinur Rahman Chowdhury, chairman of Employment Bank Porixit Datta Chowdhury, former secretaries Ranjit Kumar Biswas, Shyamol Kanti Ghosh, Elias Ahmed, Iqbal Khan Chowdhury, Mohiuddin Ahmed, Director of Janata Bank Syed B Karim, and Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) Nowsher Ali spoke on the occasion.

Student commits ‘suicide’
A female student of Advance Institute of Health and Technology of Barisal city allegedly committed suicide by jumping into river from bridge on Saturday evening.
She was identified as Shamima Nasrin alias Ashamoni, 22. Assistant Sub Inspector of Barisal Kotwali police station said Ashamoni jumped from Shaheed Abdur Rob Serniabad Bridge into Kirtankhola River at about 6:35pm on Saturday.  Later she was rescued and sent to Barisal Sher E Bangla Medical College Hospital where attending doctor Dr Das Ranbir declared her dead.  Police sources said Ashamoni was daughter of retired police Habildar Enamul Huq residing at Sohag Villa in Rupatali area of the city.  She was married to Md. Mamun, an employee of Titas Gas Company at Dhaka and since long days she was debouched from her husband.
