A Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) mobile court on Sunday sentenced 16 brokers to different jail terms on charge of cheating patients at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (Nitor), well known as Pangu Hospital, reports UNB.
A team of Rab-2, led by its ASP M Shahidul Islam, along with executive magistrate Md Helal Uddin conducted a drive at the hospital around 12:39pm, said sources at the Rab-2 battalion headquarters.
During the drive that continued till 2:30 pm, the elite force detained 16 alleged touts involved in cheating patients.
The brokers used to lure away patients from Pangu Hospital to other clinics with a promise of better treatment at a cheap rate and thus take commission from the clinic owners, said a Rab official.

As the detained 16 brokers, including eight female ones, confessed to their guilty, executive magistrate Helal Uddin sentenced them to different jail terms ranging from seven days to six months.
The accused brokers are Md Majnu Khan, Md Nazim Md Al Amin, Md Rezaul Karim, Md Sumon, Md Siddique, Md Mukarram Hossain, Md Ali, Md Rubel Pradhan, Sharmin, Reshma, Shahana, Ratna Rani Das.
