Cable TV operators in Barisal division have threatened to observe a strike to protest against the capturing of their business by ruling party cadres.
The Barisal division unit of the Cable Operators' Association of Bangladesh (COAB) said they will observe a three-hour strike from 7 pm to 10 pm on Tuesday in all areas and units of the region. The announcement was made at a press conference held at Abdul Khalek auditorium in Barisal city on Saturday.
Manjurul Alam, divisional convener of the Muktadhara unit of COAB, alleged that ruling party cadres were forcibly grabbing their equipment, cables, lines and instruments, and even luring away customers in different areas of the division.
On April 4, a group of ruling party cadres, led by Rakibul Islam, former district BCL secretary of Barguna, captured the lines, cables, instruments and 1,200 customer connections of the Barguna Cable Network, Manjurul alleged. Like this incident, several cable TV operations in the area were already captured by or under the direct or indirect control of ruling party cadres, he added.
If the situation did not change, especially if the grabbed business of the Barguna unit was not returned, then they will call a countrywide strike of COAB, the cable operators said.
